2. Along the way, I noticed that Haitians don't smile very much, and on occasions when I would smile and say hello (or, rather, "bon jour") to people that I passed on the street, I was mostly met with indifference and, on occasion, unspoken hostility. It was as if I was an indicator of some deep, existential injustice in the world—a reminder to them that there really are things very unfair and wrong with the pretext of our lives. It all left me feeling alienated and continuingly uneasy as I moved further along.
